Workforce

A recent laborshed study (released in March of 2009) conducted by Iowa Workforce Development revealed that the Greater Burlington boasts a labor force of nearly 135,000. In addition, the 2009 study revealed some interesting findings regarding the area's potential workforce:

  • The average age of our employed is 42
  • 758 individuals were classified as underemployed
  • 1,080 were classified as unemployed
  • Of those unemployed, 61% have an education beyond high school
  • Most are willing to commute up to 21 miles one way for the right opportunity
  • 65% were interested in seasonal and 71% were interested in temporary positions
  • 52% would consider varied shifts (2nd, 3rd, and split)

Southeastern Community College (SCC), located right in West Burlington, has proven to be an excellent partner in developing a skilled workforce. SCC designs many of its programs based upon the targeted needs of industry and the Jobs Training programs help defray the costs of specific training.
